Okay, so we all know that Halloween in 2020 is going to be different. One of the things about joyous living and cooking, though, is being utterly determined to make the best of things. This doesn't diminish that things are hard and not ideal, but it does prevent joy from being stolen. Off my soapbox, these Halloween chocolate spiders are tasty, easy, and so much fun! My little man LOVED his chocolate spider and begged for one the very next day (they were strategically all gone by then).

How to make Halloween chocolate spiders
These are beautifully simple to make! Take a strawberry, its stem removed, and poke eight pretzel sticks into it, four on each side.

Once you've made a few of these, place some melting chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring a little each time, until the chocolate is melted. Dip the strawberries into the chocolate, using a spoon to help coat them completely. Carefully place on a cooling rack, over foil or parchment paper for easier clean up. Once you've coated as many strawberries as you desire, place the Halloween chocolate spiders in the fridge to harden. They'll be ready in an hour.
These Halloween chocolate spiders were a major hit with the toddler.

Tips and Tricks
Strawberries
Strawberries may not be looking so hot in October where you are. You could easily substitute banana or a couple of orange slices for the strawberry. If you want it to be extra sweet, a jumbo marshmallow would also work.
Melting Chocolate
This Ghirardelli melting milk chocolate was absolutely perfect for these Halloween chocolate spiders. You could certainly use chocolate chips, dark chocolate, or chocolate kisses. Pretty much any softer chocolate you can get your hands on. The melting chocolate did beautifully in the microwave and came out soft and easy to coat with. It does cool off quickly so I was only able to dip two spiders before it started to look clumpy and needed to be warmed again.
Microwaving Chocolate
If you don't use a microwave, a double boiler will also melt your chocolate well. If you don't have a double boiler, you can place a pot of boiling water beneath another pot or bowl with your chocolate inside. When microwaving chocolate, it is very important to only heat for 30 seconds at a time. If you try to melt the chocolate all at once you risk burning the chocolate, and once it has burned it can't melt properly and will be clumpy and gross.
Storing
These will keep in the fridge for a few hours. I would recommend making them the day you plan to eat them, in the morning at the earliest. If you keep them in the fridge overnight, the strawberries start to get mushy.
